Tempo's: When You're In Charge of the Band

(This isn't a blog about how to fix tempo issues, but rather about being confident with tempos and communicating well with the band).

The past several months have been extremely hectic with accompanying three school choirs, preparing for two school musicals and hopefully accompanying for the same three choirs and maybe a Band concert in December, plus teaching lessons through my studio. I've been doing all that I can to stay afloat, yet it's definitely provided an opportunity for growth and learning.

With the Evil Dead Musical running from today through Saturday, I've learned I need to understand what the new Music Theater Teacher I started working with this semester wants for tempos. With the teacher that I've worked for over seven years, we can pretty much read each other's minds, yet with the new teacher I was blessed to work with an amazing, talented Music Theater Educator who is helping me to understand his tempos and then I must remember what each of them is. LOL. Believe me, I'm trying. Not going to lie, there were times I "beat myself up" for playing too slowly with the music and not getting the beginning cues on time with the band.

Yet I'm the one in charge of the incredibly talented band members and I've been making sure that I have the tempos accurate. To be completely honest, it's been a great learning curve to serve the band

Whatever occurs this weekend, it's all good. I just want to serve the Fine Arts Department well and ultimately have fun. Would appreciate prayers and good thoughts. May this be a time where everyone involved has a blast. Just hope I get all the tempos and cues correct. The point of this blog is that every Educator is going to want to change the tempos at times and as an accompanist you have to adhere to what the Director desires.

What have you been working on that's "Bigger Than Yourself"? Would like to know. Thanks for your support. Blessings.
