Rhythm Hopscotch

Over the years I've tried to incorporate as many games as possible with my students, yet always learning new games. Especially physical activity like I try to do all the time. I've done Hopscotch prior, yet this kinesthetic option was a hit today. I saw a video from a teacher Christina Knapp Newell from Ohio, with her studio Newell Piano Studio where she was doing a group class with her students explaining the differences between quarter and half notes. So I created my own idea today, which was a hit.

Get sidewalk chalk, create four measures of rhythms and hop on one foot with on the quarter notes and land with both feet on the ground, bending your knees a bit for the half notes.

Here is the creation of the day.

Dominick was tired of doing the patterns a few times, yet so proud of his endurance. Keep up the amazing work.

Here is Makenna trying the rhythms and we definitely had too much fun.

I want to continue to find ways to keep my students moving as they learn to play the piano. Thanks Christina Newell for sharing the idea. What are you still learning about teaching music and theater that keeps them physically active? Would like to know. Thanks for your support. Blessings.
