The Effects of Perfectionism Explained on One Sentence

A friend shared this today and it resonated so much, not just with me, yet with my students. In a world of auto tone and auto correct, performers sound flawless. Yet in reality, we all make mistakes, errors, lose focus, forget lines, lyrics and music. We are not perfect and I'm constantly telling my students to just try their best. Although this hits home with me at times and my students, I try to explain to sight-read everything perfectly is unrealistic.

When we desire perfection, we are abusing ourselves. We are flawed beings who are able to create such amazing works. However, for me, it's about trying and giving your best. Talent always beats out hard work every time. Accept, embrace your imperfections. Please don't abuse yourself in this "highest order". You will never reach it and you will always be disappointed. Just Try. Another way of saying is "Do it Scared". Just do it and have fun. Don't strive for something unreachable as perfection. Strive to give your absolute best.

How do you encourage your students to strive to do well and not "abuse" themselves with perfectionism? Would like to know. Thanks for your support. Blessings.
