Last week a new student and I talked about turning popular songs into minor keys. The student was inthralled, to the point that we spent a late portion creating an an arrangement of Itsy Bitsy Spider. The student loved the idea and wanted to take a moment to share her "creation". This sparked more excitement within me, that I want to try to do more of this with our students. I love when they compose and arrange songs. Gives them ownership of something, developing confidence.
Over the years, I've been blessed to create some fun arrangements of songs for our students and hopefully for yours. I've had the ideas of Row, Row, Row Your Boat for a bit and finally had a chance to sit down and create it on muscore. The main focus is playing a melody with chords, which is very important for students to learn how to do. The more students can play chords, understand rhythm and playing a melody, the better their musicianship will be. This short arrangement in
Summer piano games are always fun with water balloons and water squirters, making a bit of a splash at the studio. I used the car port for the fun outdoor water games, which gives a fresh perspective for the students. Inside games are helpful, yet being outside really helps. Wanted to share a fun game that I've combined from two different piano companies: Color in My Piano and Piano with a Twist. The game is to help students find a different way for the students to learn the
In the last few months I came across the 2 piano duet that is great, since last weekend we just finished off our Ocean's Project. The students did an outstanding job playing and singing songs about the ocean and acting to scenes from The Little Mermaid. What a treat. Just wanted to share this intermediate 2 piano duet, which is tons of fun by Beatrice Miller from Alfred Music. The legato melody is so prominent throughout the song, filled with quarter and eighth notes. Both of
Next week we start our Charlie camp, where students will work on the Richard George play adaptation. I'm very excited to share the dances to the music we'll be learning. As most of them are from the Broadway Musical. I don't claim to be a dancer, yet with help from YouTube tutorials and what I've learned in the past, I'm able to get by. Hope this inspires you to continue music theater in your community. The goal for me is to make the movements easy, yet still provide opportun
This year I found two arrangement of this Patriotic classic, both created by Melody Bober. One is a piano solo and the other is a duet both in the same titles from FJH Publishing. Must admit after hearing these songs I realized that at this point, the solo and duet are my favorite patriotic songs at the moment. The solo piece is close to the duet, yet each arrangement has such gorgeous melody lines, accompaniment, diverse dynamics and filled with patriotism. Hope these songs
This week our daughter is at a "camp" and the theme is about Celebrating America. My wife shared a video that the kids at this camp were able to watch. I've heard some of the history of how the Star Spangled Banner song was created, yet some was new to me. In the past two years I've been blessed to sing the National Anthem for our local hockey time, yet it opens my eyes to more that I didn't know. Check out this video and hopefully it shows more appreciation for the country w
